I created the #NowWeRise book tag, which was inspired by the stunning diverse YA fantasy, Children of Blood and Bone! ❤
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.
And on to the tag questions! ❤
Iku Clan, Maji of Life and Death: What’s a trope you’d love to see die, and one you’d love to see live, or flourish more often?
I do love a good romance if it’s built up well, but I’m all for characters becoming friends or a duo first. Show me that slow-burn, rather than the ‘they caught each other’s gaze and cos they’re both flawlessly beautiful they fell in love immediately’. If they hate each other first but have to work together… then even better.
Emi Clan, Maji of Mind, Spirit, Dreams: What do you immediately connect with when it comes to a book?
MAGIC AND SASS. Give me all the fab fantasy books, pls! (Special mention to mythology, cos that’s a huge love of mine too!)
Omi Clan, Maji of Water: If you could push a book on someone, what would you immediately recommend?
The Name of the Wind for fantasy lovers. The Art of Racing in the Rain to anybody with a heart. And Death Note, for anyone who wants to give manga a try but isn’t sure where to begin. ALL MY LOVES.
Ina Clan, Maji of Fire: If your house was on fire and you could only save one book, what would it be?
Can I say my Nevernight collection? I’ve spent a year and a half collecting special editions and ARC copies. Ain’t no way I’m letting THAT effort burn to a crisp.
Afefe Clan, Maji of Air: What’s a book that had you floating on air out of happiness?
A Quiet Kind of Thunder and Queens of Geek. THEY ARE ADORABLE GO AND READ THEM NOW. ❤
Aiye Clan, Maji of Iron and Earth: A book that’s made an impact (on you, or the world)?
A book that’s made an impact on the world? The Hate U Give. How could I omit that book from this answer?
A book that’s had an impact on me personally is definitely The Art of Racing in the Rain. It’s got such heart, humour and tenderness. Plus it’s narrated by Enzo, a dog. So what more could you want.
Ina Clan, Maji of Darkness and Light: What are your favourite morally grey characters, who do you love that walks between darkness and light?
*points to the entire character ensemble of A Darker Shade of Magic series*
Iwosan Clan, Maji of Health and Disease: Which book had a plot twist you DID NOT SEE COMING and it made you sick with feels?
GOLDEN SON, BY PIERCE BROWN. I’LL SAY NO MORE BUT MY CAPS ARE ENOUGH EMPHASIS I BELIEVE.
Ariran Clan, Maji of Time: Name your most anticipated releases for 2018!
Darkdawn, by Jay Kristoff. Only Human. Vengeful. Dark Age. Escaping from Houdini. Charmcaster. I’ve probably forgotten a heap but there’s a snapshot. [hyperventilating]
Eranko Clan, Maji of Animals: Your favourite underrated or side character?
I actually really loved Amari from Children of Blood and Bone. She’s a scared girl at the beginning of the book but grows into such strength of mind, truly becoming a princess and living up to her title by the end. She has a perspective in Children of Blood and Bone, but I still thought of her as a bit of a side character since she wasn’t entirely at the heart of the book’s tension. She was at Zelie’s side rather than standing on her own.
Children of Blood and Bone was spectacularly diverse, the character growth and magic systems were by far my favourite things about this stunning book. ❤
